Once you land in St. Thomas, there are a few well-worn paths to St. John — and a few things worth knowing before you set out. Below is what to expect from our meet-and-greet, the airport, and each of the three passenger ferries.
If you are staying at a property that requires a greet and you would like to meet your host later in the evening, an additional greeting fee may apply. Late arrivals and holiday arrivals also carry an additional greeting fee. Please inquire for current fees — we offer one complimentary greet per stay; additional greets may be scheduled for a fee. We aim to get our guests into their villas as soon as possible, especially prior to dark. We kindly ask our guests to please avoid checking in late.
You will arrive in St. Thomas at the Cyril E. King Airport (STT). The airport is on the west end of the island of St. Thomas. Once you have collected your luggage, exit the building and you will find the taxis waiting to take arriving guests to their destinations.
Tip: Carry CASH in small denominations for this portion of your journey to cover taxi shuttle, tips, and ferry ride. Porters are available to help you with your luggage at the ferry docks as well as the airport. It is customary to tip both the taxi driver and the luggage handlers on the dock. Most of these transactions are done in CASH ONLY.

After greeting the Taxi Concierge at the airport, let him know which ferry you want to take to St. John; he will put you into the appropriate taxi van and head to the ferry. Drivers accommodate multiple groups/individuals in the same vehicle going in the same general direction, but not necessarily to the same location. You can therefore expect multiple stops along the way. Those going to the furthest location will be on the taxi the longest. Fares and baggage handling charges are cash only.
There are three passenger ferries running to St. John — one from Red Hook Ferry Dock on the East End of St. Thomas, one from Crown Bay Marina on the West End, and one from Charlotte Amalie downtown. For ease of travel day, we recommend the Red Hook route for most arriving guests. This line operates throughout the day. While we love the Crown Bay and Charlotte Amalie routes, we only recommend them if your arrival time ensures you will make one of the few departure times.
The regular passenger ferry runs from Red Hook to the Cruz Bay ferry dock throughout the day. Book ahead and view the schedule at varlack-ventures.com/ferryservices. Plan roughly 40 minutes for the taxi between Red Hook and the STT airport.
Confirm in advance that this ferry is running before you plan around it. Reservations can be made through varlack-ventures.com/ferryservices. Plan roughly 10 minutes for the taxi between Charlotte Amalie and the STT airport.
Operated by Inter Island Boat Services. Check-in is 30 minutes prior to departure. Since the schedule is limited, we recommend reserving online at interislandboatservices.com. The trip takes roughly 35 minutes. Plan about 5 minutes for the taxi between Crown Bay and the STT airport.
